Checked against the supplied older U.S. Missal. Later saints and revised prayers may be absent from your book. Since February 17, 2021, the Collect conclusion omits “one” before “God, for ever and ever.” Navigation uses section names; page numbers vary by printing.

Divine Office

Divine Office rulesSolemnity, feast, or memorial? Open guide
SolemnityFirst Evening Prayer: yes, on the preceding evening. Proper or Common office, proper readings, and Te Deum. Morning and both Evening Prayers belong to the solemnity.
FeastFirst Evening Prayer: normally no. The proper feast office, proper second reading, and Te Deum are required. A Feast of the Lord replacing a Sunday follows the Sunday pattern and has First Evening Prayer.
Obligatory memorialThe memorial must be kept. Weekday psalmody and first reading remain; use the saint’s proper second reading when provided. If there is no proper second reading, retain the weekday patristic reading. No Te Deum or First Evening Prayer.
Optional memorialChoosing the memorial is optional. Once chosen, the same memorial rules apply: use its proper second reading when provided; otherwise retain the weekday patristic reading. If not chosen, pray the complete weekday office.
Evening collisionWhen today’s Evening Prayer and tomorrow’s First Evening Prayer meet, the higher-ranking celebration prevails; if both rank equally, today’s Evening Prayer prevails.
Local solemnitiesA patronal feast, church dedication anniversary, or other local observance may rank as a solemnity in that place. The displayed rank—not the familiar word “feast”—determines whether First Evening Prayer is present.
When the calendar gets complicatedAdvent and Lent memorial guide Open guide
Advent before Dec. 17An optional memorial may be celebrated normally. Use the saint’s color when celebrating the memorial; use violet when keeping the weekday.
Dec. 17–24Keep the Advent weekday and violet. The saint’s Collect may replace the weekday Collect; the seasonal readings and other prayers remain.
Weekdays of LentKeep the Lenten weekday and violet. The saint’s Collect may replace the Lenten Collect, except on Ash Wednesday and during Holy Week.
Liturgy of the HoursThe saint is not inserted into the intercessions. The optional commemoration is added after the seasonal prayer at Morning and Evening Prayer.

The cathedral's dedication and a parish's own dedication or titular day may be solemnities in that church. This diocesan view shows the rank in other parishes; check the local calendar for the church itself.

Superior, Arlington, La Crosse, Green Bay, Milwaukee, Madison, Saint Paul and Minneapolis, Marquette, and Duluth keep the Ascension on Sunday. The general U.S. obligation rules apply. Hawaii and local dispensations need a later local calendar.

Precedence and calendar sources

Triduum comes first, followed by the principal celebrations of the Lord, Sundays of Advent/Lent/Easter, Ash Wednesday, Holy Week and the Easter Octave. Other solemnities precede feasts of the Lord; those precede Ordinary Time and Christmas Sundays. Saints’ feasts follow, then privileged weekdays, memorials and ordinary weekdays.

Impeded solemnities transfer; lower celebrations are normally omitted. Evening Prayer follows the higher-ranking celebration; at equal rank the current day prevails. Lent and December 17–24 permit only the special form of a saint’s commemoration, without changing the seasonal color.

Rules reviewed September 21, 2026. Future years are calculated under these rules; new decrees require an updated download. This is a working calendar pending independent liturgical review.
